Middlesex Regiment
I've probably now blown any chance of winning it, but how does this one look to the AA experts, I need it to fill a gap in my Middlesex collection?
Thanks http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STAYBRIGHT-ARM...item3caa148238 |

It looks to be "bright" bimetal and not made from anodised aluminium IMO. You can see the tabs holding the scroll - not a feature of staybright badges!

far from blowing your chances, you've saved yourself from buying a repro, IMO it's a copy of a pre 1903 lugged badge! Andy |

I've seen a few Middlesex staybrites over the years and I wouldn't buy this one for all the above reasons.
All the best Matti |

Hi Guys,
Very late as usual. I agree with all said. I think these MIddlesex badges are reasonably common and very affordable (5 to 10 quid perhaps) so another should come up pretty soon. Regards Chris |

Have to agree with all the above comments.
Ive never ever seen a lugged staybrite with metal lugs. Some very early badges with a metal slider but not lugs |

please tell me where you can get Genuine Middx Regt Ano badges for £5-10 and I'll buy 20............ IMO they are quite scarce and would certainly be £30-40+ possibly a lot more! Andy |

I'm sure I didn't pay more that a few quid for mine on eBay. If it was more than that I really would have remembered as I have an aversion to paying (although I do quite often) much more that a tenner for an A/A badge. The Middlesex Regt. certainly hasn't registered as being an expensive item in my mind. Might just have got lucky of course... Regards Chris |

Chris,
as a general guide, Regiments that did not emerge from the Brigade system (1958-70ish) still wearing their previous badge tend to be the scarcer anodised badges. i.e. those that had been amalgamated or merged into larger Regiments during the 12 years that the Brigade system was in place. Scarce because ano badges only being introduced in the mid 50's meant that some were only worn by Regular units for a few short years (if at all). These badges all tend to reach (sometimes well in ecxcess of) £25. A few exceptions that are a lot less: Worcs, Notts & Derby? Andy |

In fact very few Regular units had a/a by 1958 and the majority of the pre1958 designs are in fact TA or Cadet ones from the 1960s or even later. The really rare ones are the very few k/c ones (Loyals for example) or units who did not have a TA unit wearing their badge in the 1960s such as the Yorkshires or the Somersets.
The DLI were worn by ACF cadets and are very common. The Yorks and Lancasters were only worn by cadets but a small CCF contingent so are scarcer. The Middlesex do tend to go for about £25. |

All excellent information but remember that the Middlesex badge that started this thread off is not made from anodised aluminium (staybright or staybrite)!
