Wearing black crown over bugle buttons as per KRRC and other rifles regiments, multi tiered shoulder titles and looks like the musicians crowned lyre badge on upper right arm.
A British utility pattern tunic without shoulder patches? |

Just a guess based on not knowing a lot about the subject, possibly WWI because of the loose, I'll fitting cut of the tunic. Of generous cut during the war, practical for service conditions to allow for wear of extra clothing beneath, they were smartened up post war, not just tailored to a unit's preference but also officially to a set pattern to make a smarter fit.

Unsure about the jacket. I thought a utility/simplified jacket lacked pleats in its longer pockets? Regards, Paul.

You're right, I think.
That bulky tunic reminds me of photos of Aussies, there'd be Aussie units that wore those buttons? Did they have a version of tunic with those tucks above the breast pockets? No photographer named on the photo I suppose? |

He also appears to wear slip on shoulder titles.

Yep, I think you're right - ahem, I blame my "3 tier shoulder titles" on looking at a small image on phone.

His youth would tally with being in a band - a "Badge" - a Band boy..
