Deeply suspicious that this has been put together, The RND MG badges are fantasy.

I don't doubt you, but that is a huge amount of work for possibly not a huge amount of money.

I can never get my head round the cost/benefit ratio of some frauds [if it is one] ....... much easier to do a day's work!

Possibly an original Gaunt book that had been stripped of all the best and part back filled with whatever was to hand.

I agree. The pages may be original but not much else. Note the soot marks have left outlines of badges that do not match what’s in the book. Some of the Gaunt books were indeed damaged by fire.

The pattern books sold by Dix Noonan and Webb were very ordered and structured (e.g. columns and rows of just buttons) whereas this is an absolute mishmash (cap badges, shako plates, belt buckles, ornaments etc spaced oddly and misaligned including obscuring pattern numbers) nothing like a professional firm would produce to show perspective clients or keep for reference.

Given some of this seller’s very brand new fake offerings I wouldn’t be surprised if he is responsible for the ‘sprinkling’ that has occurred in the book.

I'm not sure that it is (originally) Gaunt - most of the badges are annotated BP. As gaunt took over Bent & Parker in 1925, it looks as though G were perhaps using old BP material (as they do with J&Co).
I've looked at Gaunt archives (in London and in Birmingham) which include BP and J&Co but hardly any physical badges but rubbings or drawings. There are Gaunt published pattern books - certainly 1904 (some extracts have been appeared on the Forum).

I am afraid that the original badges are long gone and the book has been refilled with scrap, fakes and oddments. This seller's site is packed with copies and fantasy badges. Avoid him would be my advice to any potential buyer.

You'd think so. It would be difficult to fake something written by fountain pen so long ago.

It looks like the book was once Brent and Parker, then Gaunts got it. After Gaunts someone has taken 99% out and replaced with anything that could be found .

Look I always work on the basis of "Buyer Beware" but if a site offers a money back Guarantee you always have a fall back position . I have seen something similar to the book back in the 70's The company I worked for did gilt/silver plating for a few badge companies in the 50's most of the badges in the book were samples of badges that were never issued, items that had different finishes and items where the plating wasn't acceptable it also had examples of parts of different badges in either gilt and silver. I had no interest in badges at the time but it sort of brought out the magpie in the apprentices. All of the items had hand written notes by them with very very neat writing almost like a pattern card . I do recall that there were loads of items missing . I believe that all of the samples, some tooling and other items were sold for scrap when the company closed . To be frank I cant imagine that anyone would waste the time producing something like that for small gain when they could punt some badge real or otherwise plus wouldn't that be forgery
perhaps another thread, but why do trading standards seize and destroy fake football shirts but nothing is done about fake badges , surely they have to be declared at customs when imported ??
cheers
Steve
