"BVANS", Welsh dragon badge
This one has sat in my "unknowns" box for a long time. It looks like a Welsh dragon above the letters "BVANS" (both appear to be struck as one piece) mounted separately on a laurel wreath. It measures 39 mm high X 45 mm wide with two retaining lugs on reverse and appears to have been gilded at one time, though most is now gone from the front. There are two retaining lugs on the reverse and it came on a red wool backing, still present. One suggestion that I received was "Brecknockshire Volunteer (or Voluntary) Army Nursing Service," of WWI vintage but have been unable to find any reference to such an organisation or insignia. Can anyone throw any light on this mystery badge? Thank you

Sorry, unable to help on that one. I'm still waiting for enlightenment on this one, which bears some similarity to yours. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...read.php?t=383 Kevin |

Could possibly be the Brecknokshire Volunteers Army Nursing Service. The dragon seems to have the same stance as the badge of the Brecknokshire Battalion of the South Wales Borderers. With injured soldiers returning from the front Brecon was a very important Garrison Town during the First World War and it is possible that the badge dates from this period.

Thank you, Mr. Wyndham. What you have said is helpful supports the Brecknockshire hypothesis. Cheers, Tim
