Gaunt's Old & Curious
Browsing through a c.1905 Gaunts catalogue recently, I came across a couple of items under the 'Old and Curious Badges' listings which I don't recall seeing before. They are:
- a 46th Foot item which I can't even work out what it's meant to be - a 54th Foot item which could be a pouch badge or some such Any information, or better yet, photos of the real thing, would be most welcome. |

Gaunt
A device similar to the 46th item is illustrated by a drawing on page 7 of "A Supplement To Military Insignia of Cornwall" by Endean Ivall and Thomas. It is described as a shoulder belt plate in silver c 1813 - 1820. The actual item illustrated is HM Birmingham 1812.

Thanks for this, Marcus, and apologies for the delayed response. I'd given up checking the post because of the absence of replies! Are the upper bits meant to be rays of some kind, do you think?

Gaunt's Old & Curious
I am afraid that I only know what was written. However here are copies of the relevant details and hope that you can read them.

I’d also noted the unusual but attractive 46th badge in Gaunt catalogue and pondered it and the rays so some great information from Marcus, thank you.
It would indeed make much more sense practically for the design to be that of a PBP. No idea about the 54th I’m afraid. |
