Default Medal I.D.

Sorry if this is on the wrong thread.

I have been asked by a friend if I can help identify the medals worn in this picture of his GG Grandfather. I have no dates at the moment but he served on the Royal Yacht around 1860 with his brother. Their surname is Robinson.

I'm not sure how to show this as a bigger picture.

Thanks
David

They look like on his left breast, Crimea medal, & China 1842 medal, owing to the odd suspender.

I know nothing about the Victorian Navy but, if this were a modern photo, I would say he is wearing someone elses medals as well as his own.

Just been sent this info on him

Extract from the Times Newspaper of 14/XII/1917;

The Kings Swimming Instructor,
The death has just occurred at Victoria Bridge Lodge, in the grounds of Windsor castle of "my Great great Grandfather as the photos above at the age of 82, He formerly belonged to the Royal Navy, was known to Queen Victoria, King Edward, and the present King and Queen, as well as many of other members of the Royal Family.
He joined the Navy in 1849 and went in the Niger to the Crimea, for which campaign he held both medals. In January 1879, he was appointed Quartermaster in the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert, and while serving in her he was awarded the long Service Medal. When the yacht was lying off Osborne one summer he taught both the king and the late Duke of Clarence to swim. He left the Royal Yacht and the Navy in 1882 and was then appointed to the Victoria Bridge Lodge by Queen Victoria.
When the court was last at Windsor the King and Queen walked down from the Castle and visited "him" at the Lodge. He was married 57 years and leaves a widow, three sons and five daughters. Four of his grandsons have served in the war.

On the left breast I would rather say first two Crimean Medal with at least 2 clasps and an RN LSGC

Latest I have from my friend is

Name is Alfred Priestly Robinson (but seems to be listed as Alexander Robinson as does his brother who was Albert) while serving on the Royal Yacht.

All very confusing as so many mistakes seem to be made with the names, out of interest the Queen’s Registrar for Windsor Castle, lists him as being in the navy, as being in residence at Victoria Bridge Lodge but has NO record of him being on the Royal Yacht!!!!

Also someone has suggested ..
The Crimea story seems to hold true. I have an Alfred Robinson, 2C Ord on the roll of HMS Niger.
Medal delivered on board 20/1/56

Thanks
David

And I could be deluding myself, but one of the medals on the right breast looks like a Polar Medal - but if it is, it's in the wrong place
