Default Artillery etc.

The script on your waist belt clasp is SAV - S? Artillery Volunteers. Perhaps someone else on the Forum can suggest what the S is for - although I suspect there may be many Artillery Volunteer units in areas beginning with S. A nice item - pre 1902 of course. Will delve into the books to see what else I can discover - in the meantime, there are others out there who may have a view. Regards. David

Hi,
This belt buckle is shown in Litchfield & westlakes book "The volunteer Artillery" p156 fig 178.

It states under 'Suffolk' "An officers undress waist belt clasp belie ved to have been worn by the Suffolk Art Vol consisted of a seeded rectangular plate 2 1/2" X 1 3/4" on which was die stamped a crown over a field gun with the intertwined letters SAV below all within a wreath of oak leaves"

regards
Steve
