It is probably British and worn by a town band as opposed to a Military Unit?

Internet search
A google search of trumpet cap badge came up with the same badge listed on ebay described as british army volunteer bandsman cap badge. Does this make any sense?

I agree with Andy & Simon.
The badge itself is a generic item which you can find with various attachments. The most common one being a lyre or similar, for use by various types of civilian bands. It's most likely British, but could equally be Commonwealth. David |

Quite unusual. These badges generally have a wm lyre in the centre. Never seen one with a trumpet before ! Regards Jeff

Just to be totally pedantic....it's a cornet not a trumpet.....having played in a brass band. Which would support it being a Town Band as they are more likely to be standard Brass Band formations that don't use trumpets. Sorry......I'll get my coat!

The badge begs the question: did each type of instrument have a representative badge?

I'd be pleasantly surprised, thought that would open a whole new collecting field! 'I'll trade you four lyres for a piccolo.'
Many towns and other groups had bands and there were undoubtedly more than one company selling regalia and badges across the Empire. I've only ever seen the lyre myself, but it's very possible that some group with deeper pockets ordered a custom set for their drum and bugle band. Quite attractive, actually. |

Incidentally, I've seen both QVC & KC versions of the same badge but not a QC version. It's quite possible that the QVC & KC badges are still commercially available and still being worn. David PS... they seem to have had uses in addition to being band cap badges, you can sometimes find them with, for example, a central number. Last edited by davidwyke; 26-02-16 at 04:40 PM. |
