1978 British Army Cap Badge Display
Hi. I am (slowly) recreating the regular army cap badge display pictured, which is from a 1978 army recruiting brochure, that I have had since I first developed an interest in joining the army while at school! I would however like to expand it to include other badges that I know were being worn at that time which include:
Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Royal Armoured Corps Army Apprentice College? Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion Gurkha Transport Regiment Queens Own Gurkha Signals Queens Own Gurkha Engineers 2nd King edward V11's Own Gurkha Rifles 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifless 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles Additionally, can anyone tell me if the Army School of Music had their own cap badge at that time, and did Jewish Rabbi's of the Army Chaplins Department have their own star of david version of the cap badge? Were there any other regular army cap badges worn, not listed? Interested in any replies as I feel I'll probably get more definative answers than me blundering around blindly searching on Google, but please polite, helpful replies only. Regards and thanks Tony |

Hi Tony, the music badge would have been the RMSM badge Royal Military School of Music.
There should be a Jewish Chaplains badge although the was only ever 1 or 2 serving at any one time. There should be the Household Cavalry badge as well as the Life Guards and Blues and Royals. The Army Apprentices wore the cap badge of their parent corps. |

Similar to this which is actual cap badges on a metal plate. Came from an Army Careers Information Office and said to have been used as a poster format.
This second one is a poster from the early 1980s and shows a few additional badges. Tim

Would it have been "corps" back then rather than "services" ?

Cheers Eddie and Mike. |

It was Army Legal Services from 1948 until 1 November 1978 when it became the Army Legal Corps. Reverted back to Army Legal Services in 1992 when subsumed into the Adjutant General's Corps. There are therefore two different cap badges, similar design with different scroll detail, but the dates of when each was actually worn will probably overlap.

Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion
Tony,
Do you know when the IJLB badge ceased to be worn, I went to Shorncliffe in September 1980 and Regimental pattern badges were worn so I assume it must have been 78 or 79 ? Simon. |
