Default Firmin packet markings ?

After speaking to Firmin and not getting wholly sensible answers can any member confirm -

ITEM...with a number, is this the amount made at that particular order/run ?

And are badges manufactured after the notional end date of a unit ? Made for the collectors market and not the MoD ?

Firmins arent that great communicators,I'm still waiting on a reply from an email 3 months ago.
As for the packet markings ,I doubt whether there is a reference to what you asked about .
A notional end date for a regiment is just that notional. As we've seen all to often recently ,the new badges arent available to wear immediately. Royal Lancers and Wessex Yeomanry spring to mind. Reserves and cadets wont get a new badge straight off either,so keep wearing your old til we get some.

An assessment based on some of the FIRMIN packages I have shows:

Unit Date ITEM No

SAS 11/15 ITEM 48
LUOTC 09/09 ITEM 6
ABERDEEN UOTC ITEM 17
AGC 01/11 ITEM 594
INT CORPS 02/14 ITEM 58
QVS DUNBLANE 12/02 ITEM 1
REME 11/11 ITEM 584
WELSH GDS 03/16 ITEM 7
QRL 05/15 ITEM 6

I cannot see what the ITEM number represents. All seem too small and random to be a production quantity, although clearly the Corps have higher numbers.
I believe that Chris Marsh was unable to ascertain any actual production quantities for his “No Bull” book despite extensive documentary research. Such information probably being contract and commercially sensitive.

There have always been a/a badges for sale commercially. The sheer number of SAS a/a cap badges on the market is no small indicator that many a/a badges are made for commercial sale and have not come out of the MOD stocks. In the 1990's there was a hardware shop in Tidworth garrison that stocked cap badges and had a large number of obscure badges in ot's stock. The owner had boxes of badges such as the RSG, ACC etc - all of which no longer existed. Some dealers have moved on to ordering obsolete badges. When they come from the original maker, like Firmin, then you will struggle to identify them.

Ebay has seen a glut of UOTC cap badges recently for the same reason.

Andrew,
Thanks, your list surely proves that these ITEM numbers are completely random!
