Oh, that was a surprise! I was expecting to see a badge worn by the uniformed staff of the Department of the Environment.

Dave.

I recently acquired this example and assumed it was for an ADC to the Duke of Edinburgh?

With it being worn on the shoulder I thought perhaps ADC. But its on a Queen's Royal Irish Hussars jacket. So thought possibly QRIH DoE Squadron. Not seen this badge before, but think more likely ADC.

Whilst I do not know anything about the badge I do know that one of the hussars regiments wears a Duke of Edinburgh cypher as an arm badge, this is related to the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme, of which Prince Edward is now the head.

Id therefore suggest that your badge is related to the above badge and scheme. Maybe one of the Hussars collectors can fill this in.

I hope that this helps.

Regards

Phil.

The Duke of Edinburgh was Colonel in Chief of the QRIH and still is of the Queen's Royal Hussars. He would therefore have had over the years a number of QRIH officers appointed as Aide de Camps. Once appointed I believe the Royal cypher would/could be worn in perpetuity.

Here are a couple of EIIR cyphers worn by ADCs to the Queen.
