Are you referring to Ebay?

They have added a tax charge to all eBay buys here in the US, and it is a deterrent in my mind. Tax laws used to read that if the selling entity was not located in your state then there was no tax charged - not any more!!!

European Union value added tax
The European Union value-added tax is a value added tax on goods and services within the European Union. The EU's institutions do not collect the tax, but EU member states are each required to adopt a value added tax that complies with the EU VAT code.

eBay has added GST on any purchase from overseas for us aussie buyers.
this isnt an eBay fee, its a government tax. i assume same with all other countries. my way around it is to have friends/contacts in the US, Canada and the UK. therefore if i buy something from these places i can give a local address wich saves me on GST and if they use global postage service, i can save even more on postage. why do people refer to eBay as evilbay? i love it. i probably buy most of my items from it. if you think its evil, dont use it? bc |

I’m with you BC, a large part of my collection has been sourced via eBay. I love it too.
What does pee me off is that we get VAT & import duty on British medals when we import them back in to the country when they came from here in the first place. You can do some form filling and claim it back but it is a faff and half the time not worth the pain of going through. Last edited by 41st; 13-01-21 at 10:23 AM. |

I think ebay is fine, if as a collector you know what you are doing, if you don't, then it is perhaps not the best place to be.

Whilst the cons of eBay are absolutely aggravating, over the years I’ve added some great finds to my collections that I’m not sure I would have otherwise come across. Also, I have bought items that were stellar bargains (for my collections and otherwise).
On the flip side, there are definitely many land mines on eBay as well...buyer beware! When it comes to cap badges, the forum is an invaluable resource for navigating those land mines on eBay and elsewhere! |

Why are they doing this? Because they are legally required to do it!

I think I've noticed this on some EU and US items-any further info? I don't understand what it means and am only seeing it on some EU and USA items. Regards, Paul.

Some Out dated and some latest info on VAT. I bought my first R.A.Artillery helmet plate from Stephen Bodley when he ran a stall at Camden Passage London (UK) many years ago. I showed him my Passport and luckily had my plane tickets with me. He signed my receipt and added “This item to leave the country on ****** (date) thus saving me the VAT. In later years I’ve bought items in UK and applied for the VAT at the departure terminal (you’ll need time as it’s like looking for rocking horse poop to find the office) or you could bring the completed form back to Canada and get the appropriate amount in Canadian funds. It’s a long process!. Likewise, I know of one Western Canada dealer who states in their site, “tax to be added for Canadian residents”. Presuming that if you live outside Canada, you’ll not pay the added tax. I’m sure we’ve all seen the dealers in the UK who ship via Global Shipping. Which company graciously includes the taxes on your item in the shipping costs! Meanwhile, the cost of the item is not up to the value where taxes must be paid!.... It’s a scary world out there!
