Following up from my previous post, I have managed to find an image of an early Commissionaire, approx 1859.
He is wearing a very similar badge to my one in his cap, however, in place of the scroll he has a ribbon. Notice too the collar badges, mentioned by Button Guru, with the prefix letter. So......could my badge be a late 1800s/early 1900s cap badge Cheers Phil

Possibly a shoulder belt pouch badge.
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/co...query/Viscount Interesting that the current CofC have changed the shoulder for the shoulder belt to be worn on or over. Marc |

Hi, This brass badge is a pouch badge, the age can cover a long period, approx 1880s through to 1950/60s when we ceased using the pouch but carried on using the crossbelt which we still use today.

Hi Commissionaire,
Thats absolutely brilliant thankyou. I have the book you mention, however, I had not noticed the badge in any of the pictures. I wrote to the Commissionaires in London but never received a reply. I see you have a nice staybright crossbelt badge, one I am after You are a star, thankyou, Phil

Pouch Badge
An internet trawl has found this image of a badge described as a Corps pouch badge. I have vague recollections of seeing them worn on the pouch at the back of their cross belts.

I still can't view that video, even though I have updated my flashplayer. I have been wondering about that change of shoulder, odd. Cheers, Phil

Hi all Corps of Commissionaires fans, the image of the pouch badge is the one I own, the crossbelt and uniform is still worn today, mostly at M.O.D sites and special events, I know this because I work for the Corps, today we call ourselves Corps Security but we are still known as Commissionaires. The uniform has changed little since Queen Victorias time, the only real difference is our leather crossbelt doesn't have a pouch and the high collar was replaced with modern lapels. I collect all of their regalia and badges.
Keep smiling. Commissionaire. Last edited by commissionaire; 02-06-12 at 04:33 PM. |
