Thank God......
Bantam I'm so glad I joined this site. I was advised to by someone else on another prison type blog - maybe it was you, I don't know. But I'm sooo glad I did, if only to meet you. I have all of those badges you have and a good few others and buttons etc from before (Vic transportation - Convict Department/Service era etc).
Funny you should talk about books being written about our stuff, I'm still after many years trying to produce one myself (Gatelodge wants 3 centre page double spreads. I am also in the process of making my own free Google website about British prison badges and insignia with loads of photos). I'm still working on it but if you PM me and send me your personal e-mail I'll send you a taster of the front page. Just for you I went through all of my personally taken photos from Newbold tonight and looking at what I have, this was the time when the bullion badge for Chief Warders were changing. The laurel leaf's were still bullion, but the now small brass crown wasn't. In my opinion that is what you have. It is the centre piece from a Chief Warders badge on an 1869 Shako that lasted up until the 1920's. I even have a photo from Winchester where some are still wearing the 1869 Shako and the newer ones have the peaked cap. Now let me sort my computer out and I'll post pics ASAP - but please do PM me so we can talk.

HMPbadges,
I have pm'd you. Thanks for the information and if that book ever gets published I will buy the first copy. I will await your reply. In the meantime a picture of an ER11 Chief Officers badge before the rank was devolved in the late 1980's.It was the highest uniformed rank in the Prison Service. Hi destro, can you post a picture for me please? I have an idea it may be colonial but will have to see first. Mine's certainly 1830's/40's.

Federal Prison USA 25 years Service Pin.
Hi All,
Whilst not being British this Fedral Prison 25 year service pin badge is one of my favourite prison badges. It is much smaller then its British equivalent and thus not as ostentatious. The symbols represent as follows. Key =Security. Book = The Law. The Sun Burst=Rehabilitation and Education. Regards Bantam |

Hi all, to all of those that asked, I finally fixed my laptop so hopefully I can post some old British prison badges - here goes!
IMG_0079.jpg Hopefully that worked? This is an example of the first regular form of insignia for Victorian Prison Warders, worn on the Shako cap.

Hi HMPbadges,
Brilliant to see that you've sorted the problem out.I have only ever seen distant shots of this badge in faded photos so its great to see one like this. What are the dimensions of the badge. Superb. Regards Bantam |

This is an origional Convict Department button (used during the days of transportation) from Millbank Prison (1822).
It pre-dates the Convict Service buttons that are sometimes seen around. IMG_0220.jpg
