My 100th Militia Button..!
Hi Gents,
When I first started collecting British Militia Buttons 100 examples seemed a very long way off but I'm totally thrilled to present my 100th example and what a very special button it is too... The 100th Militia Button in my collection is this exceptional 1st Demerara Militia, in gilt and marked 'J. Mann Superfine'. I'm still trying to pin down a date for this button as it seems the history of Demerara is quite complicated but needless to say it's early but I think (?) 1800-1802. Any help greatly appreciated. Well here's to my FIRST one hundred buttons, now I'm looking forward to number 200.. Cheerio, Roy

Cheers Roy, Good Luck on your next 100. Keep that 100th button well wrapped up..... it may not survive that mountain air where you are now! Regards, Dave J.

Thanks Dave,
Fortunately and despite the 18" of snow outside, our little cabin is toasty warm and dry.. Cheerio, Roy

Thanks Andy,
I remember when I reached 30 buttons, 100 seemed a million miles away, so it's been a journey, although I must say a wonderful one at that. Cheerio, Roy

Now that’s what I call a very interesting article! Amazing what you can learn on this, the most interesting Military Badge Forum. Thanks for posting it BTNS. D.J.

Demerara sugar came to mind. The history being a bit brutal by the looks:
https://blackpast.org/gah/demerara-rebellion-1823 Mention of militia here, which you have probably seen: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...ilitia&f=false Scrolling up from the link to page 295, there is a date 1824 further mentioning the militia - not sure how relevant this is, but perhaps of interest Also see page 264 for reference to Militia Act etc (may need to scroll up from link) - see attachments https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...ilitia&f=false I have experimented to attach some information from the above link - but no doubt there is more to read there. Thanks for all that Gents,
Especially those links Mike, hadden't seen them prior. It's nice to see the listing of officers to this unit as this button likely originated with one of these chaps. Cheers, Roy

Just added some more info from this link as an attachment to my earlier email. Hoping this is of interest - and indeed, could be one of the officers named is the one the button belonged to. Mike |

Thanks Mike,
Those were the dates I have. It's the first time for me having and example by this maker. Doesn't seem to be much on him and I would say not a common backmark to encounter. Cheerio, Roy
