Size is important - what are the dimensions of yours?
The two images attached - one (L) is an obvious fake marketed in the UK the other (R) is very small (the same size as the metal 2 SBS badge) and has been in my possession for some 30 years. I like to think that mine is a contemporary piece made up in UK to replace the metal badge which might have been lost or given away to a lady friend. Mike

As Mike says ... Lots of cloth fakes. Extremely rare original headdress badges are metal and enamel.

NOTE:
For this device the unit designation is - Special Boat 'Section' not 'Service'. More specifically '2 Special Boat Section'.

Mike
PS - Perhaps the best source on this (apart from War Diaries) is 'SBS in World War Two' by GB Courtney. The author (Geoffrey Courtney) served with the unit under his brother Roger who basically founded 1 and 2 SBS.

Mike it could well be a very small blazer badge. On a quick google and I know not a great source but
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Boat_Service
Says the SBS were in the Korean War?

Matt

High Matt
Sorry - I was referring back to the unit the insignia related to - ie 2 Special Boat Section, which was a WW2 Commando formation.

The SBS was continued by Royal Marines under a variety of unit names ... Special Boat this, Special Boat that - still exists today as an elite force. No doubt you have seen the flying, paddling, frog badge adopted for the blazer in later unit guises.

All the best
Mike

This is not bad re 1SBS
https://paradata.org.uk/units/specia...t-squadron-sbs

Recall the insignia at the top of this thread was 2 SBS

Default 2 SBS

In case anybody missed it first time I posted it, here is the pattern book artwork by the firm of UK enamel badge manufacturers who made the original 2 SBS beret badge. Dated 26 Nov 42.

Default Badge SBS

Mike,
Interesting, thanks. It would be also interesting to find out when the SBS adopted the design of the frog para wings etc. The earliest I know of that design being used was when a Unit plaque with the same design was given to the Capt of the QE2 in 1970s.

Nicholas Morigi faked the same design described in his catalogue as a "cap badge" in the early 80s see pic.

Of interest the SBSA was only formed in 1998 from members previously in RN, RM and SAS RA. They adopted same badge but scroll "Association" instead of "Not by strength by Gile".

Anyway, can anyone date the adopted frog para wing insignia before 1970?
Best regards
Matt

Hello Matt
I believe the original artwork suggests the Frog Badge was designed (and manufactured) as early as 1948/1949. I very much regret not having bought it - there were about four sketches and explanation.

Nice one Mike, thanks for that, perhaps a forum member bought them? It would be good to see the drawings. I have also never seen an early badge of this design made? Here's hoping!
Regards
Matt
