Default Army School of Musketry, have I made an expensive mistake?
Hi Guys,

Can I have opinions on this School of Musketry badge, please?

The buttons are Jennens and Co and came with the badge, pretty sure they are OK.

Unfortunately, this badge shares many of the qualities of the badge in the other thread which has been condemned horribly.

Your post piqued my interest, so I went looking, and found this page:-

The back of the one there shows N/S lugs and tabs to hold the crown backing on.

Looking at your pictures, I think I see evidence of those having existed? Hardly the sort of thing a fake would have.

Perhaps an easy repair once upon a time for someone, or a beret with the pocket in?

Hi Andy C, I have just had a look and the mark that is on the badge is a bit of glue or something similar, no sign of any lugs being there. Also, no sign of those tangs to hold felt in place. The felt I have has a hole in it and slides up over the slider. Its a nice badge, as you say, but i have a bad feeling.

Thanks Andy H, it was that thread that prompted me to have a sinking feeling and post my badge.

I am awaiting Andy P's response , then 3 Andy's in one small thread!!!

That's what I'd seen and assumed to be a broken lug, also, against the upright of the slider, is that not another lug?

Sorry guys, it is just some manky old glue, i just scraped it off. It must have been holding the felt in place at some time in the past.

circled in orange, this is just some of the front detail showing through, its an optical illusion as it is actually concave.

I think you have a total fantasy item, the rifles might be original but badges with this large crown are all reproduction items in my honest opinion!

I will try to argue with the shop keeper but its just my word against his opinion. He is quite sure he doesn't sell repros etc.

Any idea on the value of the buttons? have a forum member interested in them if he won't accept a return at the shop?

If I am reading my copy of 'The AA Badge book' correctly this is a Gaunt style slider. Not much help.

I have an a/a badge or two with this slider type. Could this badge perhaps be a gaunt 70s restrike of the arm badge, as its gm?
