City of London Volunteer Corps

This is 38mm across, marked on reverse Sterling Silver, WO Lewis, Howard St, Birmm. When would it have been worn? Does it have any value? Thanks Mike |

Cannot place a value on this particular example, but the standard g/m versions go from anywhere between £30 to £60 (ish) depending on whether you acquire one from a dealer or somewhere like eBay. Hope this helps. Regards, Peter. |

Thanks for posting that. A cracking little photo. Apologies for not making previous point very well, but the badge I was referring to is the brass version of the one Mike has posted (his being a silver example): CoL VC.jpgCoL VC 2.jpg Without wishing to hi-jack Mike's thread, perhaps you could clarify exactly which unit this lapel badge shown above is to. I have always been under the impression that it was to the City of London Volunteer Corps... CoL VC 3.jpg ...as opposed to the City of London National Guard Volunteers (affectionately referred to as 'The Methuseliers')... Gentlemen,
Is the City of London volunteer corps capbadge as shown by Peter above, the 2nd picture of the bronzed badge, scarce and valuable? Many thanks Jon |

City of London Vol Corps

10.08.14. Central Association of VTC established in London. 20.08.14. First meeting of CoL Vol Corps 19.11.14. Volunteer movement recognised. 12.12.14. Mention of 1-6 Plt existing. 00.12.15. Corps locations: HQ- 3 Fleet St A Coy: 1-4 Plt B Coy: 5-8 Plt C Coy: 9-12 Plt D Coy: 13-16 Plt E Coy included a Kentish Town Plt. Remainder of Platoons of this Coy recruited around St. Pancras Cyclist Sec, Medical Sec, and Signalling Sec existed. This VTC organisation should not be confused with the City of London Civic Guard. The CG were raised by the Lord Mayor in 1940 from men and women who were willing to come to the City of London in event of an invasion threat and remain there. They were raise under the Town Clerk (who was Controller ARP and Invasion Defence Officer) 09.10.40. Mention of Civic Guard having a purpose in assisting organisation after Corporation work was no longer possible (i.e. post-invasion). The Cg was organised into A, B, C & D Divisions. All members were issued a lapel badge: these cost the Corporation of London £150. Stephen. |

Jon,
These badges, like many VTC badges, are pretty scare - although original ones do occasionally come up for sale. I've seen maybe 2 or 3 in the last several years. They are probably worth £40-£60, but can be had for less due to the proliferation of copies, which are generally available on eBay. Copies start at about a fiver, but can be a lot higher; beware! I'm afraid to say that the badge Peter has pictured is a copy. It looks the part, generally well patinated, but as some of these copies have been around almost 50 years that's not very surprising. The "original" badges have a couple of distinguishing points, the most obvious of which are the spines(?) on the dragons back. I attach a couple of picture to show this.
