G'day Dazza,

Welcome to The Forum.

Cossum shows an identical looking badge (RS42) which he describes as........."Unofficial hat badge worn during WW1 supposedly by members of the 1st Australian remount unit."

Finishes: Blackened brass.

Cossum's illustrated badge does not appear to have a slider as does your one.

Other Forum members may be able to tell you different or more, particularly as to value.

A very nice badge, I think.

1st Australian Remount Unit WW1. They called them the "Rough Riders". There is plenty of information about the unit if you google.

This badge was most likely manufactured by local craftsmen in either Egypt or Palestine during WW1. These badges were worn and as such "trench art" is a description I would not use.

I wouldnt hazard a guess at value, but its is worth a lot. Mick is the man to ask as he may of seen another sell at auction........assuming one has ever sold at auction!

Very nice item and rare too.

I don't recall ever having seen one for sale before. Not sure about the slider though.

I have seen one in a collection before and pretty sure it had lugs.

Will have to do some more investigating.

The trouble with these badges is that they are very easy to reproduce....after two hours in the shed you have one ready to go.........there were a number of these badges about the market a few years ago, mostly seen painted in thick black paint.
Brad may be able to SHED some more light on the subject of reproductions....

The badge needs to be sent to one of Australia's leading militaria auction houses. From there it will be authenticated and then sold.

Smile Rising Sun badge

G'day Dazza

Thanks for posting the badge.

It looks to have been made from a genuine WW1 Rising Sun, I have a similar badge that is in tact that came from a family member who served in WW1. It has the same shaped voids above the scrolls and the slider is attached in the same place and is unnamed. So I expect that both examples with rings and sliders would exist depending on which badge was used to creat the one that you show.

I have not seen an example and there fore cannot comment further.

I hope that this helps.

Regards

Phil.

Value = what someone is prepared to pay for it.

That is a lot of money to pay for a badge based on such poor pictures IMHO.

Did it sell? I thought the listing just ended.

Maybe it might get re-listed at a more realistic price.
