Default Royal Marines collar badge conversion

I bought this at the weekend as I was puzzled as to why somebody would go to all the trouble of converting a Royal Marines collar badge into a beret badge. The slider is particularly short and seems to serve no useful purpose. Any thoughts are welcome.

The badge may be offered for sale.

Thanks Phil, you may be right but it is a large badge for a button hole.
