19th PWO HUSSARS
I'm not sure if I've posted this badge in correct place, if not I'm sorry.
Over the years I've had a this badge a good few times, and I was told it's a rare badge and they were all copies. This one came from a old man is this also a copy or a real one?

Hold on....while it has some minor detail features that look questionable, it is not one of the commonly seen fakes. The lug placement, tail and other features are what one would want to see on originals.
As I understand it, these badges may not be as rare as had been commonly held by most. I am sure some more will chime in here. CB |

It's not made from a modern die. However it's not from a die that I recognise and the reverse looks suspect. It is not from the same die as ones I have seen in collections mounted for display in the early 1900s.

It's very odd looking to me, especially with that 'humpbacked' elephant.
Compare it to these ones... http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=119422 http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=134513 http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=101085 http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=20474 Cheers, Alex |

It looks like it's in brass. I've only seen them in white metal. Here's something I put together a few years ago and posted on the Forum, which might be of help.

I agree with Alan. Definitely not the usual die but personally not a badge I would buy.
Interestingly the pink stuff is ‘soldiers friend’ which was a contemporary polish. It’s residue is not uncommonly seen on original badges. Indeed balanced with usual considerations I often regard it a good sign. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/hatch...olish-tin/amp/ So question is, does someone have a tin leftover and is currently applying it to restrike badges to deceive or is it indeed more contemporary in this case? Which would make this badge rather older than one might think at first glance. Cheers, Luke |

You can still buy pink polish.

The pink stuff looks more buff coloured stuff to me - Brasso or similar.
I've seen what appears to be the pink residue of soldiers friend applied to fakes & reproduction before, I don't regard its presence as an indication that a badge may be genuine. |

Very interesting, the badge came with these two other badges that I assume are ok?
The one thing I did notice about PWO badge is that it's very thick and quite heavy compared to other badges

The Beds is a fake. They were always voided even in all brass.
