SAAF Wing, U.P.S.C. Title, Silver G.G.S. badge
Clearing up a collection for the family of a deceased friend, who collected in the 60s-90s.
Hoping to get an ID on these items (which will eventually go on ebay for the family): 1 - Silver and enamel pinback badge, "G.G.S." 1.75 inches by 1.25 inches. 2. Cloth title, white cotton on dark blue, 3.5 inches by .65 inch: "Unit Parachute Selection Course" has been suggested--although it could just as well be the "Uttar Pradesh Service Corps"! 3. South African Air Force wing--original or repro? Any info appreciated. |

The UPSC title was identified in the February 2014 issue of The Military Heraldry Society's journal The Formation Sign as an arm title worn by India’s Union Public Service Commission, a central government agency overseeing a range of professional examinations.
Their website is http://www.upsc.gov.in/ and its workings are xplained on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_P...ice_Commission Quite why such a body wore a shoulder title remains a mystery unless it was at one time a uniformed body. Jon |

In many cultures and countries, anyone who can possibly get into a uniform does so, as it implies the importance and gravitas of one's organization. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the IUPSC wore uniforms, especially if their job involved travelling from school to school during exam periods. Nevertheless, an interesting 'para-military' take on the job is suggested by a shoulder title.

I'm sure that UPSC title was illustrated in the journal of the Military Historical Society in the 1950's as belonging to the Uganda Police Special Constabulary.
I have the bound volumes at another location from where I am now but will check when next able to. In the meantime if anyone else has those books or the master index it was an article about Uganda Police badges. Hope my memory isn't playing tricks on me. Regards, Andrew. |

Hi Rodd
Andrew is spot-on, this is a shoulder title for the Uganda Police Special Constabulary (formed 1950) in white embroidered on dark blue, depicted as Andrew states in "Badges of the Uganda Police" by Dr H.H. Curson in the Military Historical Society Bulletin (unfortunately I only have scans and do not know the date of publication). Best Graham
