Hi Folks. I just bought a postcard supposedly showing a WW1 soldier of Royal Irish Rifles (name of Carvill on postcard back) which may be a red herring. I'm puzzled by the badge on right upper arm, which doesn't look like it is sewn on. I've done my best to enhance/sharpen the image. Any thoughts? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hello jimjferran , welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts.
You have attached the image as a pdf file, and you may wish to post it as a link instead. The badge on the sleeve appears to be a bugler's badge.

Agreed, interlocked bugle horns.

Of course! Thanks you Bill and Phil for the prompt help. I'll take your advice on attaching a link in future, Bill. Thanks again.

Can you post a copy of the back of the card? There were Carvills in the Royal Irish Rifles, also a Bugler W Carvill in the Shropshire Light Infantry!

The double bugles badge for a buglar is only worn in Rifle Regiments and therefore it is going to be the Carvill in the RIR. A bugler in the KSLI would have a single bugle as his badge.

Hi Charlie. See pic. I've looked at 2 Carvills in RIR on Ancestry but can see no mention of Bugler in their service records. I'll chase up the Shropshire lead and see if I can trace the man back to NI. Thank you so much. I'm very impressed by how people on here are willing to help. Hope I can do the same for someone else.
