Can anyone identify the badge that my great-grandfather is wearing on his cap? He seems to be missing from all WW1 Army documents held at Kew, and I'd love to find out what he did in the war.

Thanks all, RE it may well be then, even though in his mid-40s when The Great War broke out. My grandfather died 20 years before I was born so I have no idea what his father did. It would appear that his WW1 records were amongst those lost in 1940. Is there anywhere else that I might be able to find them. Especially in this centenary year, I'm most concerned to get some commemoration of what he did up. They did so much.

Looks as though he is a Sergeant or Staff Sergeant. At that age he may have volunteered as a specialist for example as a photographer or surveyor or something from his civil profession or trade. If you post his fullname and other known details some of the members here may be able to assist with information from Medal Index Cards, etc.

Thanks all. He is Richard William MARTIN born 1871 in Portslade, Sussex. I can find nothing else about his war record, and his listing in the 1911 Census is as a general labourer at the Brighton electricity works, so I can't see how that would be a specialism!
