Hi 1314,
An interesting question. I cannot answer it to your satisfaction but here are some details that might help.

A list of units with Auckland in the title:
Auckland College Rifles
Auckland Militia
Auckland Navals
Auckland Rifle Volunteers
Auckland Rifles
Auckland Scottish Volunteers.

The 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles, formed in 1911, had roots in the following units:
Colonial Defence Force Cavalry
Drury Light Horse Volunteers
Nixon Light Horse Volunteers
Prince Alfred Light Horse Volunteers
Royal Cavalry Volunteers
Waiuku Cavalry Volunteers.

Your relative may also have served in the Armed Constabulary.

Hope something here will point you in the right direction. You may know the district your relative lived in.

Cheers, Tinto

During the period (Officially formed in 1867) they were more commonly known as the “Mounted Armed Constabulary,” however, official documents tend to use the term “Armed Constabulary (Mounted Section).”
The interesting thing is that after a mounted section of Armed Constabulary was established in Cambridge in June 1869, they were occasionally referred to as the “Auckland Mounted Constabulary.”

If you supply the name of your distant relative, I may be able to help with your badge question.

If your interested in all the Auckland Mounted units that served from 1860 onwards, you might find the following link of interest.
I have made a brief mention of the formation of the Auckland Mounted Constabulary under the title of “Cambridge Cavalry Volunteers”

I have been able to confirm that 1314s distant relative did indeed serve in the Armed Constabulary (Mounted Section) and was based in Auckland. As well as winning the ‘Cavalry Champion Belt’ in 1875.
The badge that his relative would have worn would be the same that Tinto has posted in this thread.
(Sadly, like Omok1, I am not convinced that the badge posted by Ray is original)
