Default Black Watch of Canada Variations

Greeting Chaps,

I thought I would start this thread in the hope of learning a little more about possible variations of the Black Watch of Canada officers badge. I can show 'three' distinct variations (see attached) and wonder if members had other examples they would be willing to share?

It is always nice when one can acquire badges that straddle a couple of collecting interests and this is certainly the case for me with these examples shown here, as they fit into both my Canadian interest as well as my new endeavor of collecting the classic Black Watch pattern of badge.

Brass Tacks!

So I have for your interest 'three' examples of the WWII officers pattern of the Black Watch of Canada badge. All three are distinctly different in their construction and one would presume manufactured by different makers (?). Badges are shown from left to right A, B & C. They are placed in no specific order other than starting with what I feel is the best quality piece and moving on from there. Details of each badge are given below for your interest. My question or more correctly optimistic enquiry - is that I would be interested to see other examples by forum members, especially if those examples are different in some way?

Example A: Six part construction (35 grams), voided back plate with scrolls affixed by pins. Note a small plate (bottom right) to the rear which states 'Made In England', slightly obscured by one of the fixing pins.

Example B: Also six part construction (41 grams), solid back plate but with top scrolls affixed metallurgical/chemically while the bottom is pinned. No markings.

Example C: Two part construction (47 grams) with the scrolls and central device forming one part, this all affixed to the main plate by pins. Screw posts instead of lugs. Also maker marked Scully Ltd Montreal.

Roy.

Well Gents,

I started this thread a few days ago and with over a hundred visits and not a single reply, I can only conclude that no other members have any examples of this badge they wish to share?

I think that perhaps this badge is rarer than I first thought and as a result it would appear I must be quite fortunate to have found three..

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy, Sometimes threads get missed. I didn't see this until you bumped it with your post. Not sure scarcity is proportional to the lack of response. For example, I don't collect kc officers' badges and thus I don't have any examples.
I can add a dollop of CCWD. It is suggested that some Canadian Black Watch officers wore a First World War pattern cap badge. It was related that this was a tradition of some sort. I have not been able to track this down to verify or discredit the story.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for that, very much appreciated. I have heard similar comments before, so even if evidence for such practices is scant there seems to be some anecdotal reference. One of my other WWI Scottish badges did come out of an old Canadian collection with a similar story, so such practices would make sense.

As noted at the start of this thread I have 'three' of these all slightly different. It would be nice to see if there are another examples out there but maybe I have cornered the market..

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy,

Nice group of badges you have there!

Here is a pic of my post-WW1 Black Watch of Canada officer's badge. I think this one is the same as your first badge. The plaque says JR GAUNT MONTREAL MADE IN ENGLAND. The gilt and silver finish is worn off on my example.

Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for sharing this super example. I have looked very carefully in comparison to my example 'A' and I agree it looks identical (bar the makers plate position etc). If nothing else it makes me more convinced my example is by Guant.

A lovely badge Ian and nice to see another example. It would be nice to see some more but as these appear thin on the ground I won't hold my breath (now where's the smilie face for that?).

Cheers, Roy.

Larry I will drop you an email.

Roy.

Here are the CEF Black Watch officer's badges for the 13th and 42nd battalions. They are both marked MACDOUGALL'S LONDON. The badges Roy and I posted above are post-WW1.

The 13th is inscribed K R Townsend. His rank and full name is Lt Kirby Robert Townsend and he attested on December 30th 1915.

Both hard to find badges but I think the 42nd is slightly more so.

Cheers, Ian.

If you move into the qc era there are several more officers' patterns.

Greeting Chaps,

I started this thread off to share/discus three WWII variations of the Black Watch of Canada badge, however I have just had a lovely early post WWII example come in that may be of interest (see image attached).

Although unmarked this example is believed to have been made by Scully.

Historically I have not strayed into badges newer than post WWII but this beauty is a good reason to never say never!

Cheers, Roy.
