That 2nd VB scroll gets around - it's like a parasite, attaching itself to more and more hosts.

There is a nice name for people born on the wrong side of the sheets.
They are doing a great service to our hobby. |

I don't know where the Lpl Pals badge is but the beauty that Peter has highlighted is EXTRAORDINARY !!!! The 'original' badge is the last of the 1926 Pattern types, introduced at the end of - or even just after - the 2nd war. The blackening however, might be genuine. As to the added scroll.........
A little historical research might have been in order ! Anyway, another seller to avoid ! |

Thanks Paul
OUCH !! It is not an 'officer's badge' but one delivered to all ORs who joined up before whateverdateitwas in 1914. The casting is not too bad but the assay is a) in the wrong position and b) one dated to after 1970 HM reforms - I'm sure someone with sharper eyes than I can work out the date. It may even be legal as there is no association with 1914 ! |

The 925 in the mark indicates post-1999 hallmarking, and it is a good casting. Although it doesn't say its period, I would suggest that the inference from the title is that its period and if you were a new collector or not up on hallmarking you might well think its genuine. If you are selling something that has the appearance of something made 100 years ago but you believe its not, then you are probably on shaky ground legally if you fail to point it out - for many laws an omission is treated the same as statement of fact. Sadly though in my experience the Trading Standards, who are actually based in the Assay Office won't enforce anything.

From the same seller - 'THE ROYAL ARTILLERY 1ST CITY OF EDINBURGH VOLUNTEERS BADGE'. Is this a commonly faked badge ? if not, has someone gone to a lot of trouble to reproduce an obsure badge from an original die or is it simply garbage ?
Cheers, Mark |
