Default Unknown NZ formation sign

Hello Gentlemen,

Can someone kindly tell me the unit and time period represented by this badge? I purchased it in New Zealand about 1985.

Hi Dob,
According to Malcolm Thomas and Cliff Lord's books, New Zealand Army Distinguishing Patches 1911-1991:

Your patch dates from 31 January 1974 when New Zealand Force South East Asia (NZFORSEA) was a Singapore based tri-service military Force.

Also worn by New Zealand Defence Support Unit (South East Asia) formed 1 October 1989 in Singapore.

And also worn by other NZ peacekeeping forces since.

Cheers, Tinto

No longer worn by NZDF but is still worn by the guards at Sembawang, Singapore.

To the best of my knowledge there was no WWII New Zealand formation sign, or so I've been told...

New Zealand didn't wear cloth formation signs like the example illustrated at the start of this thread but did use vehicle formation signs, with three formations using the Kiwi;

A white Kiwi with a black background was used as the formation sign for the 6th NZ Division in 1942, which was a fictional division created out of the NZ Base units in Egypt as part of the deception scheme Operation Cascade

A white Kiwi with a black background was the formation sign of the 3rd New Zealand Division that served in the Pacific 1943-44.

A Black Kiwi with a white background was adopted by the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Pacific units (2NZEF-IP) in New Caledonia 1943-44

This is news to me. Were these tactical symbols painted on vehicles, or actual cloth formation signs worn on uniforms? Do you have photographs?

Only painted on vehicles and not worn on uniforms.

Only images I have on hand are from the book "Formation Badges of World War 2 Britain, Commonwealth and Empire by Howard Cole
