RO Half-Wing Worn

RO is for Radar or Radio Operator...see below*.  Emphasis is mine...caption is IWM. Flight Sergeant A B Downing (pilot, left), and Sergeant J T Lyons (radar operator, right), a successful night-fighter crew of No. 600 Squadron RAF, smile for the photographer at Bone, Algeria, on the day after they shot down five Junkers Ju 52 transport aircraft in ten minutes. Downing and Lyons, attached to No. 153 Squadron RAF at the time, intercepted the German formation while on a patrol 30 miles south of Cagliari, Sardinia in the early morning of 30 April 1943. They were awarded the DFM for this sortie and commissioned, and subsequently achieved another seven victories over Italy before their tour of operations expired. RO was actually Radio Observer.

I think the correct AM designation was Observer Radio, but, as far as the brevet itself went, it was the other way a round, does not matter, bloody good photograph though.

These two Air Ministry Orders (AMO) shed light on the confusion
Jon A402 29/5/41: Introduction of new pattern badge for officers and airmen qualified as Radio Operators (Air). Approved – similar to Air Gunners badge described in AMO A547/39 but with letters R.O 9/16 inches high. To be worn as AG badge and may also be worn on Suit, Aircrew. Stores Ref 22H/547 Badges, Radio Operator (Air). To be authorised when course at OTU completed. A503 10/7/41: Aircrew category Radio Operator (Air) now redesignated Observer (Radio) – existing badge for Radio Operators (Air) will be retained
