A Royal Arms badge with diamond centre in a style that wasnt worn in the British Military.
The loop fittings show it was fitted to something but, as to what I cannot say. The Royal Arms was used by all manner of companies and organisations with Royal patronage. regards

Thank you Simon for your comments, it has been suggested that it was the South African Reserve Regiment badge for Boer War but unable to find confirmation of that. It is very delicately made. Denis

Never heard of the South African Reserve Regiment.
Do know a Royal coat of arms was worn by the Boer War era Home Counties Reserve Regiment, however, their badge was quite different in several respects to the badge shown in the OP. |

boer war badge
"Love the face on the lion" - poor thing, by that face it looks like it's just had some important bits chopped off or misused with a hot poker...

I’ve just realised where the badge in the op has come from. The description on the list it was attached to is an obvious mistake.
Clearly it was supposed to be Home Counties Reserve Regiment of the Boer War, however it is not. The other badge listed with the same incorrect title was a Home Counties RR as pictured below. Alas you have an unidentified badge which I doubt is Boer War related. |

The unicorn is suffering the same outrage as the Lion....I find it hard to believe this is any kind of genuine badge.

The only explanation I can think of for the eyes is possibly they had tiny ruby inserts, making the badge a ceremonial dress item? Just a wild guess, and I haven't even been drinking!

Lion & Unicorn
Love all your comments on the lion & unicorn!! I do not think it is a fake badge, just not British Army as pointed out. It is beautifully struck on thin brass, not g/m, and has the old style short victorian loops. It is an oddity but would still love to find out what it was. Regards Denis

I've seen this badge design of thin die stamped brass sheet soldered on old metal water tanks and the like. Used to have one with an additional rectangular plate with manufacturer's details on it. |

I'm not going to joke about seeing it on old water tanks and old boilers.
