RTR belt buckle queries
Hi, in a separate lot got these items. The belt buckle takes the ordinary cap badge with the help of a backing plate. With it came a belt buckle badge but the lugs are too far apart to fit the holes in the belt? Why would the belt buckle not have holes the right size? I've never really bothered with belts am I missing something? Thanks in advance Mike

Mike,
Here is my RTR belt plate badge. Probably more recent than the examples you show and although as cap badge, specifically made with two flat lugs North - South. I have noted many variations in the position of the holes/slots on belt plates and differences in the spacing and size of lugs on what are otherwise identical badges. Some examples here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...p?albumid=3131 Tim

Cold it be that the belt plate is not a RTR plate but that the RTR cap badge fits it?

I suppose other units wear or wore a black belt with brass fittings, I wondered if this would be fitted with a RTR collar dog?
The belt came with a scarlet Hussar or yeomanry cap minus insignia so perhaps to one of those regiments? |

Mike,
The black plastic dress belt for No 2 Dress was purchased from the PRI (Regimental Shop) and ISTR did not often conform to the standard cap badge fitting. There was one that had a single lug hole in the centre of the buckle for a full size cap badge, secured in place by a backing plate and pin, which, again, was only sold by the PRI. I can remember inspecting a parade of soldiers, looking splendid, or as good as Tankies could, noticed that his belt badge was "wilting". When I poked it the badge fell to the parade square. He had removed the fittings and glued the badge to the buckle. I will dig out my parade belt and post images for info soonest. Kevin |

Hi Kevin, thanks for the information. That really reinforces what has been said before. It would be interesting to see you bits, if I can say that without misinterpretation, best wishes Mike

Leigh,
The plate conforms exactly, but the adjustment buckles do not. The belts during my service, 1972 - 1992 were clean with length adjusted through either end of the brass buckle. Incidentally the best way we found to clean the plastic belt was with shaving foam............ |

As promised my (now grotty) No2 Dress Belt with East West fittings for a standard cap badge.
For comparison, and to reflect variations within units, I have attached images of a belt for the Royal Irish Rangers with North South fittings. Kevin |

Here's my belt buckle badge.
It's the older AA badge strike, distinctly different to the newer ones, smaller crown, thicker at the top of the wreath. Taken from a belt worn by a serving soldier from the late 60's to 90's. N S fittings. Chris |
