Default Victorian naval badge

Hi Guys

can anybody help me with this brass badge. It came with an old note saying it was dug up from an 1850s to 1870s barrack site. It measures approximately 49mm in diameter and has some damage as pictured. Any help appreciated. Craig

It's certainly not any official Royal Navy badge of the period. I've certainly never seen anything like it before.
