Dating a Uniform / Good Conduct
Hi
Trying to date this RAF uniform. I'm pretty confident it is inter-war (that's a bi-plane strut behind his head) but the only real lead I have is the good conduct stripe on his left arm. Can anybody tell me when the RAF phased these out ? He has no wings so also not sure what sort of Aircrew he is designated as. A faint medal ribbon is visible. Many thanks W |

Hi Jo,
Unfortunately I think this is as big as I can go as I've blown up a very small photo. Will tinker tonight and see if I can enlarge by other means. Thanks W |

Without a bigger photo its very hard to distinguish anything. However...
The gent is an 'Other Rank' and is wearing the open collar 1936 Pattern tunic (previous to this they were high collar, worn without shirt and tie). Although the high collar tunic was worn by some into the war period, 1936 would be the earliest date of this photo. The shoulder eagle appears to be on dark blue/black, which changed about 1949 to a blue/grey backing, although again it was some months before stocks were fully issued. So that would date the photo pretty much to between 1936 earliest and about 1949 latest. However, he is wearing a C Type flying helmet which was first issued in late 1941, with either Mk IV or Mk VII goggles. If the latter, they came in in June 1942. So with all that, it would narrow it down to probably early 1942 to about 1949. If it were larger and I could see what the sleeve badge was it might narrow it down further. One could be the badge worn by occupying forces in Japan which would date that to 1946 onwards. |
