BLACKENED RFC?
Hi, I've had this for some time and always been tempted to see if it will clean up. I was looking at this further today and I thought that it looks like it may have been blacked a some time.
Any thoughts on this one. Simon.

Hi Simon, just a very wild guess, and I'm prepared to be shot down in flames. Could it be a Territorial badge, worn by members of units such as, the Territorial RFC Hants? Rather like some Territorial Infantry units wore blackened badges.
Look forward to hearing more ideas, Dave Moore.

Hi David, that's something I wouldn't have come up with. That would make it something different. Although if it is that would mean I'd be on the lookout for a Flying version to fill the spot in the WW1 collection.

Hampshire aircraft park was the RFC's only Territorial unit, that I am aware of. I have seen shoulder titles attributed to this unit in books but have never seen one in the flesh. The badge may well be just dirty, just trying to get the discussion going.

Blackening was not uncommon even for non TF units, presumably to prevent a shiny badge giving you away, I would leave it as it is, You may find an answer one day,Kevin

I can remember my father telling me that during the 1950's, he used to be asked by members of the RAF regiment to subdu badges for them, which were worn whilst on exercise. I might be wrong but I think that he used to heat them up and then quench them in oil.

Thanks David and the team. I think to leave as is, is the best way for now. I cleaned it recently, as in a light clean with acetone and it didn't shift the black; hence my thoughts the "blacking" question.
