Cavalry arm badges
Late in WW2, some armoured/cavalry regiments of the Canadian army adopted the practice of wearing arm badges. Photo evidence shows the practice in the 1 CACR, and 6 Hussars. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/d...61e418fc72bc1e
Which units adopted this practice? |

Hi Bill, responding a bit late about your search for other units wearing arm badges, I knew about this one and I wanted to share.
Check the Sgt. on the left. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/d...hki39aplh10kh3 (I also remember seeing a photo of a trooper of the Royal Montreal Regt. (in their 2ndWW Recce days) wearing the cap badge on the chevron, and being told it was for being a Sgt confirmed in rank). Jo

Lovely picture Jo. Along with the cap badge on the tunic, it is interesting to see the plain 2nd Corps patch. (Rather than the 12 D on 2nd Corps pattern.)

Maybe, because it is a "post-war" photograph and the troopers had to look good for the parade? I just wish we had access to ALL the archives photos then we could probably find some more interesting details about uniforms and badges. Oh well............

GGHG Sgts
Cap badge on the apex of the chevrons. This is a detail from a larger photograph of A Sqn Sgt's taken some time in the fall of 1945. He is the only "confirmed" Sgt. in this photo.

Bill, Original source is Bill Alexander. (One of the issues with the internet.)
It appears that most if not all Canadian "cavalry" regiments adopted the practice of armbadges at the end of hostilities. Is there any evidence of the infantry regiments that were converted to armour doing the same? I can not think of an image of regiments like the GGFG, CGG, BCR's, Ont R, Calg R (Tank), South Alberta's wearing badges. |

also infantry
this was done by Le Regiment de Chateauguay after they were amalgamated with the 22nd Regiment in the 50s. I know I've seen pix with the Chateauguay cap badge on the sleeve, but couldn't lay hands on one at the moment to post. Will keep looking.

ebay photos
Blair Ferguson (ensignferguson) is selling an interesting lot of 17th DYRCH photos/memorabilia.
In looking at the photos he posted there is a couple examples of Sgts wearing cap badges on the right chevrons. I would agree as you stated Bill, it does appear "most, if not all" pre-war cavalry regiments adopted this practice. The converted infantry to armour did not? Was this also a British cavalry practice too??
