Default Trinidad and Tobago or Jewish Battalion???

This badge was recently sold on eBay. It looks as if someone took a lot of time and effort to make it a voided badge as you can see the cut marks around the Star of David etc

I was under the impression the Nigerian Customs badge had a scroll?

This scroll-less badge features in the Martin Marsh catalogue. The badge pictured is from that die, albeit a less often seen voided example.

So a Nigeria Customs badge minus the scroll and voided??? Yet the star of David is used on Trinidad and Tobago badges like the police.

The discussion over these "dud" star of David badges has been had many times previously. If you search the forum for "Nigeria customs" you will get it all. The Star of David was actually, at one time, on the British Colonial flag of Nigeria. It was commonly used on many Government badges in the colonial period.

They are from different dies.

The Nigerian Customs is made by Firmin.

The Martin Marsh badge has differences in the crown, Star of David and seeding pattern. To my eyes the poorly rendered details look made by the same/similar hand to those who cut his other fake dies.

Dave - I’m sorry I lost track of this there have been so many threads over the years. Is there a photo or some other proof of the Marsh die badge being worn by Nigerian customs? And if so do we have a case an organisation adopting his badge similar to PRI shops stocking metal badges from him i.e. ‘genuine fakes’ in instances where worn.

Luke, I don't have any direct evidence that the Marsh style badge was worn by any Government agencies in Colonial Nigeria. That said, I had, many years ago, sight of a collection of colonial Nigeria badges from various Govt. Depts. with that pattern of badge included. I'm fairly sure it would not have been included had the guy who owned them not been certain that it was actually worn there. The gent in question had worked for the Nigerian Govt. right up to independence and was very knowledgeable. With hindsight, I should have been more inquisitive but was mainly interested in the police related items rather than the other uniformed depts. that he collected from.
Consequently, I never asked who actually wore it.

Whenever I see the badge, I always think, rightly or wrongly "Nigeria Customs". Often when I mention Nigeria in the context of the Star of David, the other party to the conversation will immediately say, "No, its from Trinidad" or occasionally "No, its from Palestine". In reality its probably from Marsh's workshop - but then it gets more confusing.

The bottom line is that wherever the badge appears, voided or solid, the odds on chances are that its a spurious reproduction fit for the bin.

Dave.

Nigeria became independent in 1960, if the Marsh die existed then I’m a Dutchman. I’m sure it must be a far later, by a decade or more, addition to that frame. So it cannot be colonial era.

For me personally given the attributes of the badge and volume of fakery involved unless a picture surfaces of Nigerian customs (or anyone) wearing one - which would certainly be 1970s or later - they all remain in my belief purely a Martin Marsh fantasy badge.

Strongly I suspect the Nigerian customs badge was inspiration but that’s as close as it got to customs or Nigeria.
