My best find this year is this third pattern Surrey Militia button dating, I believe from the 1790 to 1801 period. (Ripley reference 223). This Unit was reformed in 1763 before gaining the 'Royal' title in 1801. In excellent condition for its age with the 'Firmin & Co, London' Maker mark to the reverse and a local pattern to me I have been after for some time.

Is there a specific reason Surrey is spelt without the "E" ?

No specific reason other than a regional variation of the spelling at the time as far as I can find out.

A London newspaper from 1759 used the same spelling.

"A London newspaper report of 9th June, 1759 stated "Yesterday the Militia of Southwark, & c, in Surry (about 400 in number) were exercis'd on Clapham Common "

This would be a great item to see :

"had on when he left the Battalion his Drummer's coat, white, with red and white lace down the Seams, his Cap, on the flap of which is embroidered, "Surry Militia", and his Regimental Sword".

Thanks Mike, seems to have been a well used spelling variation of the time. That Drummers tunic would indeed be a sight to see and own! ..........the

My No1 pick up for this year has to be an Australian Pre Federation (ie pre 1901) Queensland Scottish helmet plate. Its just beautiful and also rare. Thanks Geoff

Quite the year - a beautiful baby daughter, a COVID-19 vaccine that works but dropped from further clinical trials due to HIV false positive tests and a near complete set of Officer’s gilt King’s Colonials Regimental and Squadron badges, and King Edward’s Horse Officer’s gilt badges.
