Default Unknown Royal Engineer Badge

Have just acquired this photograph of a Royal Engineer Band taken at Abergavenny c.1914 and as with most RE Territorial Bands it is virtually impossible to identify the actual unit. I am puzzled, however, as to the badge being worn on the right side of this Sergeants tunic - it looks like a name badge with a small grenade in the centre - has anybody come across this sort of badge before please? Several of the Band are also wearing lanyards some of which are just a plain cord whilst others are knotted.
Many thanks for you kind assistance.
