Default the Importance of Commas

When ordering insignia from civilian companies it is important that the comma is very, very clear. There is a BIG difference when the comma is not clearly understood when ordering new rank slip-ons for Major, General Service.

Yes,
misinterpretation can have some awful outcomes!

As a young LCpl I was tasked to order some new t-shirts for our unit by the Team Sarnt Major! It was from a previous supplier so I was instructed to ask for the same design but with the addition of the team title below the logo we had previously ordered!

Simples I thought so made the phone call and job done!

The unit title = "The Guards Free Fall Team"!

Went to collect the t-shirts a week later

"The Guards 3 4 Team"

Be clear with your instructions!

I believe our band ordered some pipe banners from Pakistan, and sketched out the design, sending the sketches to the dutiful embroiderers in Sialkot.

Good workers that they were, they masterfully hand embroidered all the pencilled notes from the sketch right onto the banner design, stuff like "badge in full colour" and "3 inches from the top" in script.

I never saw it, but the stories made the rounds for years.

Bet you're glad not to belong to them, huh.

Love the stories (and myths) about insignia mess ups. The upside down embroidered Sherbrooke Hussars CF long style title boggles the mind. How could someone not catch the error? Yet a run was done.

That sounds really unwholesome...

At work some time ago I took a call from a clergyman who seemed to be talking about advertising a "basic spank".

It turned out that he was talking about a "basics bank" which was/is an alternative name for a Foodbank.

The trouble is that too much communication is now done online and by text so the basics of good English are ignored , I do it myself, and punctuation marks are either left out or used incorrectly, things like exclamation marks after a full sentence rather than after an exclamation. Yikes! I hope I got that right.
