Many reasons.

That type of fake is very well known and has numerous tell tale features for example, the laurel spray within the circlet has an overly heavy outline giving the leaves a hollow appearance. There is a small notch out of the metal on the left hand side creating a gap between the outermost leaf and the crown, the lettering on Princess Beatrice’s scroll has rounded ends, as does the battle honour albeit this is less apparent.

Add to the above the strike, sliders and in better photos the metal will also give further clues to them being not correct.

... But would the cadets have polished their badges heavily to the point rubbing them smooth and then had them chrome plated? I doubt it. It’s a worn badge that has been plated later for display.

Or cadets were given hand me downs?

Thank you. Now I see the flaws and have unearthed a reproduction in my own collection. Maybe it is best to remain in cheerful ignorance?
Now hunting for a proper one at a good price.

Default Another IoW Rifles

I am keen to get my hands on a good one. Opinions please. It does not seem to have the faults pointed out by Luke. In white metal.

Hi Nick,
Possibly the best thread on the Cap Badge.

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...e+wight+rifles

I think the one you show is Ok, it is most similar to the Officers Silver Badge produced by Gaunt, I have no date or proof for the badge but do have one similar and a Gaunt badge.

From the above thread you will see comments regarding the centre tower, which is certainly correct on the early and WW1 badges, hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.
Regards Mark

Thanks Mark. Chasing this one to ground is driving me crazy.

Default Isle of Wight Rifles - Opinions Please

I recently purchased these and believe, from researching other threads, that the four with sliders are genuine. I’m not sure about the fifth one (bottom right in the pictures). The quality doesn’t look as precisely made as the others and I’m not sure whether it is genuine?

I’ve added a couple of extra photos of the badge in question below.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but for what it is worth, I don’t think any of them could be considered ‘genuine’.
The middle one top row, looks very much like the one supposedly worn by cadets post war. The top right one has the ‘look’ but still not convinced.

Unfortunately, the amount of these badges sold in many of the times gone by ‘junk shops’ here on the Island, usually from a ‘deceased estate’, make it virtually impossible to secure an authentic example.

Default Isle of Wight Rifles

After gleaning as much information as I could from past threads ref this badge, I hopefully haven't wasted my money.
Thoughts/opinions are welcome.
Cheers Tony.
