Default S S Commando badge

I picked this badge up from a very old collection, any ideas as to its rarity

What would you say entry level is regarding the price for one these, whether from a "old" collection or not?

I've had one in my collection for over thirty years. It is still a fake.

There are several threads about this design - at best a design worn by old comrades of the Commando Association - post WW2, not period, based on No.2 Commando Officer pattern (but with COMMANDO over the top) - a badge to beware of.

I think they probably first appeared in the mid-late 1970's. I can't recall seeing one prior to that and then all of a sudden they were everywhere.

I have not seen one with the lugs off set on the letters before, they are normally on the Knife, or with a slider (shank).

Hello Marc et al

These 'Association/dubious' badges come with a number of lug permutations. North-South, East-West, Offset. In white metal also in gilding metal. Some examples even have sliders as you say. Some examples are cast, others are die-struck.

Certainly - in my experience - the genuine No.2 Commando Officer versions (lacking COMMANDO over the top) have lugs north and south. There may be exceptions as several variants exist.

The Other Ranks badge (plain F S Knife lacking 'S' and 'S' either side of hilt) is lugs North and South.

As Mike B, says this metal badge is one designed by the, now defunct, Commando Association for its members and, other than the word 'COMMANDO' across the top, is similar to the No.2 Commando Officers cap badge.
Towards the end of its existence, the CA did away with this metal badge and opted for a cloth badge for its members to wear on their berets - along with their regiment's cap badge. The cloth cap badge was a red dagger on blue shield with 'COMMANDO' in white over the top

Thanks No5 Cdo - I was going to note the cloth badge this morning but note you had beaten me to it and have added a good clear image. Again this cloth badge has been known to cause confusion.

An original, wartime manufactured, 2 Commando beret badge with Commando title.

Handmade, ex-Len Whittaker collection.

Whilst the others are fake, would you say it is likely that this wartime handmade version was actually worn during WW2?

The badge I illustrated was made to be worn. So I assume it was, although I have no photographic evidence to support my assumption.

Mike B may be able to add to the discussion, as I believe the badge may be mentioned in papers he is using for research...
