ROYAL WESSEX RANGERS -- Who??
A recent post featured a prop badge from the TV series "Soldier, Soldier".
Here is one from an older TV series, it was called "Spearhead" and was on TV over a few years c.late 1970,s/early 1980,s. I can just about remember it, it seemed like quite a realistic portrayal at the time. As you can see, no expense was spared with the Royal Wessex Rangers badges - hard plastic with a velcro strip on the back! I think the "regiment" must have had the Gibraltar battle honour if the castle is anything to go by, although the key is missing.

Nice item. I just remember the program and it has been mentioned before on the forum- badges being thought to have been glued to berets. I wonder if the Velcro may be a later addition for display- I don't think there is enough of it to hold the badge in place long on a beret- I could well be wrong though! Regards, Paul.

Many thanks for the replies. The velcro was on the badge when I got it so I assumed that was how it was attached but, as you say, not very secure. No trace of glue on the back so perhaps they used both methods? I wonder why they had both brass and plastic badges, maybe they ran out of the brass ones and had plastic ones made up? David

Here is mine moulded in a plastic resin. No visible means of securing it to a beret!

Probably brass for close up or main actors close in shot, plastic for background actors?

You may well be correct but here are two more theories.
I looked the series up on Wikipedia and it says the first series was set in Northern Ireland and the next two series in Germany and Hong Kong. Perhaps the brass version is meant to represent a C/B with a regular "bright" finish and the plastic version, which gives the appearance of being blackened, is supposed to be a subdued "active service" badge? Then again, maybe the brass version is just supposed to be a better quality Officers badge David

Having just recently watched all three series of Spearhead, the apparent lack of a 'fixing' to the rear of the badges may explain why the badge sits either too high, too low, skewed left and/or right on the berets worn by the actors.

I was never privileged to see the show - wrong side of the Atlantic here - but I seem to recall from an earlier thread that the show did a season or two, then a hiatus and was resurrected. Either way, plastic and velcro would be a typical television props trick to save money - I know a little about that - and would explain both this example and the phenomenon remarked on by Diehard.
