Badges blades
I have these two badges which I think are from circa 1881-89, one is a officers and the other could be a N.C.O.s as it has no enamel. My question is why the heavy blades compared with the later versions used in the later officers bronze badges. Could this style of blade help date the badges.

Cheshire Regt
I am no expert on Cheshire badges, but was this type post Great War?
I have two or three variations in OSD like these which I thought was the later type. The blades I think are manufacturers differences. Rob |

This style of badge was issued from 1881-89 the again in 1923-2007. The later pattern had lugs.

Cheshire badges
Mercian, thanks for your information, so some of my OSD's may be older than I thought, live and learn.

Cheshire OSD's
Mercian, could you give me some timeline on these three please?
Would the left hand badge and the top one be from the 1881-89 era? Rob |

I would say all after 1923.

I think the term 'cap' for 1881-9 needs to be defined. Do you mean an officer's Glengarry ? The general design might have been used but not the style.
In any case I think the badges you show are the 1923 (cap badge) Pattern with a variety of blades. I have quite a few on KLR badges. The thickness is because they are in slver (or plate) whereas copper / brass can be much thinner. Bronze OSD badges only appeared in 1902 - they certainly wouldn't have worn dark bronze on any kind of cap in 1881-9. BTW they might have worn a badge similar to a collar badge on the FSC after the disappearance (for most line regiments) of the Glengarry before the 1897 Pattern appeared (also used on the FSH). |

If they were 1923 pattern l presume they would have lugs. Officers did wear collar badges in the glengarry and this pattern, the Brunswick Star before the pattern with the scroll, in fact both patterns were worn for a short time the scrolled pattern in the glengarry and the star in the F S C. One is definitely a officers SG and enamel the other is not enameled, it's the heavy blades which is of interest to me.
