VAT
Hello Troops
I have just won a few badges and a medal on ebay, from two dealers based in the UK. One wants UKP5.00 to send two badges to Australia the other dealer wants UKP12.50 for one badge and one medal? I know that every dealer I buy from charges different amounts, why? My main point of this thread, is that they both want to charge GST [VAT in the UK]. Is this a new tax by the UK, or the Australian government? Regards Terry |

G'day Terry
The cost of the postage depends on whether the package is "Signed for" (Registered in Aust) or if its just posted and that usually cost about 3 pounds, the Signed For is usually about 10 or 12 pounds. I buy off UK dealers and Forum members all the time and that's about the standard cost. Sorry mate you've just got to cop it on the chin or in the wallet. Regards Phil. |

I send to Australia and NZ regularly and I will only send items Insured and signed for.
This means the cheapest postage is around £10 and if the value is above £50 it jumps up to £12 or £13, so you are paying the cost of shipping only and are not being ripped off. If I buy from those countries I always pay extra for insured shipping also by choice so it works both ways. Royal mail is cheap compared to many countries. regards

GST
Yes, GST is new on items bought outside Australia. By the time you add it, and P&P it effectively doubles the price of the average eBay item! I think it 10%.
eBay add it automatically at the checkout. https://www.finder.com.au/australian...ional-shopping Stephen.

Thanks lads for your replys.
I always ask for Royal Mail International Standard postage, but these are the rates they won't. I have been buying from the UK for over thirty years now and I have always received the package, never lost one. Pity about the GST, maybe if I get the orders sent to a UK address I can bypass the tax? I think Australia must be the most taxed country in the world. A farmer in Australia is committing suicide every four days. The government wont people to work until the are seventy years old, no one can live off the pension, one hundred and five thousand people are homeless. I could go on but I have digressed. Here are the 2012 Australian rules for charging GST on imported items.
https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Facts...sfactsheet.pdf and for selling and buying second hand goods: https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/...nd-hand-goods/ This is a document on the 2018 changes. https://www2.deloitte.com/content/da...ide%20deck.pdf Does it mean GST applies to antiques and collectables? updated: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/389313 VAT on exports to non- EU countries. VAT is a tax on goods used in the EU , so if goods are exported outside the EU , you do not charge VAT. You can zero rate the sale, as long as you get and keep evidence of the export, and comply with all other laws. Last edited by btns; 09-08-18 at 01:51 PM. |

New Tax on Australian Imports
Is ebay collecting the new tax or the seller? I know that abebooks is paying the tax themselves at the moment until they can collect it from buyers.
I also believe if the business (seller) is not over the Australian GST threshold then the tax need not be paid? I'm not sure how these rules are enforceable on non-Australian businesses? If a British business starts collecting tax for the Australian government what do they receive in return for the hours put in? |

Surely the sellers must be using eBay’s Global Shipping Program hence the additional charges?

Greetings Terry.
I'm flying to Perth on 10th September or thereabouts. If you wish, have the dealers send them to me in England, I'll pack them, take them with me and then post internally to you in Oz. If you fancy that and can wait another four or five weeks for the badges, please let me know and I'll supply my address here in Blighty. Regards Brian |

What annoys me the most is that the 10% GST (since 1st July) is now charged on the postage as well. Ebay's double-dipping ripoff Global Priority postage is about double the Post Office cost for the same service and I just won't play their games, would rather buy elsewhere.

Dear Brian,
A really good offer, 10th Sept is not far away. I have just sent a message to an Ebay seller whose listing states he will only post to UK not Australia. Will get back to you when he replies. Thanks |
