Legion Etranger badges
A friend brought these back from France recently for me,given by some ex FL friends.Nice badges, not my field but i hope the units are correct.
Top Row Lto R. 2me Battaillon Etranger Parachutistes. 4me Regiment Etranger D Infanterie. 1er Regiment Etranger de Cavalerie. Bottom Row l to R. 4me Regiment Etranger D Infanterie Compagnie Portee. 1er Regiment Etranger Portion Centrale Groupment Autonome. 4me Regiment Etranger D Infanterie 3 me Compagnie Portee. I believe that they are circa 1950's. |

Hi signalman, you're right on all accounts, except for a detail, in the second row, middle one is simply the badge of the 1er Regiment Etranger, based at Quartier Viennot, Aubagne.

The para badge is Regiment not battalion so the title is 2REP rather than 2BEP.I think that 2BEP did exist many moons ago,IndoChina era.

Thanks Jo,Mike. I really like these badges and think i might have a wee diversion in the old collecting field, are the Legion badges subject to the same faking as the British and Commonwealth?any info you have would be appreciated.I also confess that my knowledge of Legion Etranger insignia (and mis-reading) comes from a small book which my friend also obtained from an ex Legioner.I have attached the front cover.Best regards.Phil.

Hello Phil, to answer your first question....YES, all the Legion Etrangere badges were copied at one time since the early 1980s by/for the SIHLE (Service d'Information et Historique de la Legion Etrangere) through their magazine "Kepi Blanc". Those were made by the well-known company DRAGO for the collector's market. A French author Christian Malcros even wrote a book titled Insignes de la Legion Etrangere, (d.1981 Ed.Kepi Blanc) IIRC it list all the badges of the LE since the early '20s.
The original badges, from the 30s-40s, are very very difficult to buy($$$$$$) and copies,by Drago, abound on the French market. If you want a preview of what you would get into, here's an address to a French dealer. Go to "catalogue" and, in the bottom window go to "Legion Etrangere" then on the right you will have a list, click on one subject and then "rechercher" and, enjoy. http://www.i-m-l.com/ Legio Patria Nostra Jo * BTW, the 2BEP (created 1/10/48) and 2REP have the same pattern of badge.
