Default Hertfordshire's Army Cadets- New book

I thought other may be interested in this recent publication.

Col John Sainsbury, O.B.E., T.D., F.S.A. has produced his latest masterpiece on a Hertfordshire military subject:

'Hertfordshire's Army Cadets' by JD Sainsbury.
Published by Hart Books (Welwyn), 6 Roundwood Drive, Welwyn Garden City, AL8 7JZ.
ISBN 978-0-948527-11-1

John Sainsbury has very considerable experience both as an author and soldier. TA service as CO the Royal Artillery's successor to the Hertfordshire Yeomanry stimulated his interest in his regiment's history and provided the backbone to his writing.

His first book, Hertfordshire's Soldiers, published in 1969, is an over-view of all the various military units formed within the County since 1757. He has since followed this book up with numerous well-researched, and detailed books covering the Hertfordshire Yeomanry and its successor artillery units; an illustrated history of the Hertfordshire Regiment; the Home Guard in Hertfordshire 1952-57, and the 'Herts V.R.', a detailed look at the Great War VTC in the County.

This latest book continues in the same vein as its predecessors. The format is a softback A4, with 308 pages profusely sprinkled with 190 black and white photos. Meticulously researched, with the support of the local ACF and Public School CCF units, this work not only details the history of local units but their development into a nationwide context. In the absence of a national history of the cadet organisation this book lays out the route taken from 1886 to the present day.

This book offers much to many. Not only those who want to know about local or national history, but the inclusion of insignia, arms, equipment and clothing are included to satisfy those with more marginal interests.

It may not be a book to sit down and read straight off, but it provides an easy mix of reference work with a style that can be browsed. I recommend its purchase.

Copies are available in local bookshops priced at £25. If purchased directly from John Sainsbury, c/o Hart Books, they are £20 (cheques payable to JD Sainsbury). This includes p&p withing the UK.

Just perfect for someone to buy me for Christmas (if I didn't already have a copy)

Stephen.

What a great pity there are not similar books for other counties.

I am always fascinated by the display of Cadet insignia at the Shropshire Military Museum at the Castle in Shrewsbury, again it is a pity that other museums that I have been to dont have similar displays.

Thank you for that Stephen, I was with Herts ACF in 1997-8 based at Buntingford and Stevenage North. My step-uncle was with the HG.

Phil,

Don't worry if there is a delay in your book arriving. John is in India for a month as of last Friday. Its worth the wait though.
