Default Manchester Airport item ????

I'm guessing this has something to do with Manchester Airport, any help appreciated.
Will be moving this item on.
Tony.

It looks to be the centre part of a Manchester Airport Fire Service Helmet Badge.

Tony.
Nothing to do with the airport fire service. It is a cap badge worn by security officers during the 1980's.

Mike I see where you are coming from, the badge you show I believe to be the fire service. An example of this badge on the Internet is a one piece item, with the lugs attached to the star.
The one in post #1 has no missing star.
Regards Tony.

The link I posted shows a badge with lugs which is held on to the star with a cotter pin ,the star itself has two screw posts.

They are two entirely different badges, used for different purposes. This is quite clear from the photos. The lugs on the badge shown in the first post are long cap badge lugs. The lugs on the back of the two part FB badge are very short and are commonly used to attach two part badges together. Certainly too short to go through a cap.

Dave.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the explanation , I wonder why/when the fire service decided to use the same crest on their badges?

Its quite simple really, the Airport Fire Service and the in-house security were/are employed by the same private company, Manchester International Airport Ltd. The wings and centre shield were (at that time) a basic part of the corporate image of the company. The badge (minus the star) was used as a brooch badge on the uniform of the female information assistants and as a cap badge (with lugs) by the in house security officers.

Historically, the Manchester Airport Fire Service used the same badge with the addition of an FB star backing. They still use it as a cap badge, although caps are now seldom worn.

The "security cap badge" which started the thread, is no longer used. Their attire is now of a "non-military" design consisting of a blazer type jacket/trousers with shirt and tie. They don't wear caps any longer.

I'm attaching as front and back image of the current Airport FS cap badge for your information.

Dave.
