Interesting Anodised Royal Welch Fusiliers Variant Perhaps?
Here's a photo of the backs of three RWF anodised badges. There's the well documented early one on the left which has a slider and no hackle holder (which I kindly obtained from Forum Member Bess) - and the ubiquitous late one on the right, which is now on tabs and with a hackle holder.
But what about the middle one which has tabs but no hackle holder? Possibly a bridge or interim badge between the early and late variants - or something else entirely? Is it a known variant to anyone? Mark |

My take is this :-
The RWF ORs didnt always just wear a beret. Im not sure when they stopped wearing the cap but i do have a couple of images of the cap in use. |

Thanks gents for the feedback. Having a badge without the hackle holder would for sure allow the badge to sit snug against the stiff front of a cap.
The badge has a couple of other interesting features; The grenade has the normal four holes around the circumference for the friction pegs to slot into from the motif arrangement, but these haven't been used and the motif is actually held by two pegs on a central line. Also the flames of the grenade are 'die-cast'. Anyway, I thought it was worth showing as an anomaly. Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 01-04-22 at 07:45 AM. |

Perhaps of interest is that in the earlier (pre amalgamation) episodes of the TV series 'Soldier Soldier' the cap badge was a modified version of the RWF badge. These were apparently made from rejected badges and a new overlaid centre (lion over a crown in circlet HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE) was added. Not sure if they had a hackle lug although a hackle was worn. Anyone got an example of the badge?

Ok chaps. I found that I do indeed have an example of Marks odd variant. It is the example rejected by the Regiment as being substandard- the central device was fixed off set at an angle to the right and the flames were not symetrical and are distinctive by the single 'drooping' flame on the right side of the badge as you look at it. Indeed it does not have a loop for a hackle. Tim is correct that these 'returns' ended up being modified with a central device for 'Soldier, Soldier' ' the King's Fusiliers. The central device was later used on a variation, fixed onto the backing grenade of the generic RRF badge in brass not anodised.
There are quite a few makers variations of the RWF, including slidered examples and an odd plastic badge, with a slider, similar to the black RRF type used in N.I. Regards all Bess Last edited by bess55; 01-04-22 at 10:14 AM. |

Bess,
Thanks, I have the King's Own Fusiliers (RRF type) badge and hackle but would like to acquire the earlier King's Fusiliers (RWF type). Tim
