I have a hunch..... it could be the RHA? The old chap is wearing what I think is the Royal Artillery badge in his lapel. The RHA wear ball buttons and the chain mail could be an old style of dress in Blues..... he could also be Yeomanry RHA (Leicestershire had a Yeomanry RHA unit). Also the collar badges do look like flaming grenades....

Hold on then, according to census records, the old man Heffernon was a corporal in the Royal Artillery..maybe this picture is father and son then? Interesting idea ..

I would go with that...... BTW the older gentleman is wearing a medal ribbon on his waistcoat as well..... that might be a 1st Boer War (only 106 handed out??) ....if he is the chap born in 1855 that would make him around 63 years old in the picture (it fits)?

Well he died in 1933, I have photo's of him when he is quite old, he looks very similar to the man in the photo, just thinner and with a bigger moustache ! so it could well be him.. when are you assuming this picture was taken? Around WW1 i guess by the younger mans uniform?

The picture was taken near or at the end of the great war I am guessing.

I managed to speak to my grandad.. it took a while, he's 88 now and talks forever !

The younger man in both pictures is Frank Ketley, he was just a family friend. He doesn't know about his history but remembers him coming round the house on a horse !!

The older man IS his grandfather, Arthur Heffernon ( born 1855 ) .

He knew he was an artillery man but didn't know anything about the medal ribbon.. Any ideas ?

The census records have him thus:
aged 29 as a bombardier
aged 36 as a Corporal
but then
aged 46 he is listed as a "fitters labourer".. so his military career was finished

I'm going to do some searches and see what conflicts his career could have covered..

If he is 29 at Cencus time and a Bombadier.... then that makes the year 1884, the First Boer War was 1880-1 Have you still got his medal it might be the one below?

I wish ! No I haven't. I have my great grand dads Mon's star from WW1 etc..

They are not worth much monetarily but are priceless in historical terms to me ..

This is interesting now with old man heffernon, I can see where he was barracked by the different birth places of his 10 children.. And I can put a date on when he was at each place by their ages.. this is fascinating stuff !!

I don't know, He was born in London but the first of his children was born when he was 25, and she was born in Scotland..all the rest were born in various parts of the south east..

It does leave possibly 7 years of his military life before that unknown so I need to start digging a little..
