Default Cannon shell protector

Hi All
I have just picked this up at a market, never seen anything like it before. I am guessing that is clipped over the back of a cannon shell to protect the percussion cap / primer from being knocked and dischaging, is that correct?
Can anybody identify the markings?
The broad arrow is obvious, so I know that one.
The "4In MkIV Gun" is interesting. I know naval cannons were called guns, so is this a naval item?
Thanks, cheers,
Alex

Default Quick Firing 4 Inch Naval Gun

Hi Alex,

I'm a member on both sites.

And I can tell you that you're on the right track, as the clip does protect the primer.

Here's a link below.

I've asked BOCN members about the ES&S stamp to see who made it and I'll let you know when I get an answer.

Cheers,

Invest

It is as you assume.

Not sure if they are still in use but I have 2 Pounder Anti-Tank gun examples as I own a 1945 Daimler Armoured Car.

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the replies. I have never seen one of these before, so very happy to learn something new. I am quite convinced it is for a naval gun now, so that is nice for me.
Cheers,
Alex

Alex,

The large 'N' on it is used on Naval Equipment to indicate their ownership/use.

I used to find dozens of these for the 18Pdr QF Gun on the Battlefields of France, but have never seen one as nice as yours.

regards

Looks like these came in various sizes to fit on different munitions.
